Welcome to the Classic National Football League Website!

Former 49ers and Buccaneers quarterback Steve Young was inducted in the Pro Football Hall of Fame earlier this year. He had the highest passer rating of any quarterback in NFL history and wn 3 Super Bowls as a 49er. The EA Sports Madden Video Games Classic Teams.

If you do, then you have come to the right place.  My name is John Miller and I have been an avid pro football fan for the past two decades and it is my goal to share my knowledge of the sport I have passionately followed during that time through this little outpost on the World Wide Web.

I have always been interested in learning more about the NFL's storied past while keeping up with the present day happenings as well.  This thirst for more knowledge has prompted me to provide some information regarding some of the NFL's most storied teams from player roster, to results, to statistics.  I will be updating this site periodically so I encourage you to visit frequently for continued updates.

Until 2004, the Madden football series has given gamers (like yours truly) the option to use previous Super Bowl squads and various other top flite NFL squads throughout the history of the league.  This was a nice touch, but the players frequently had inaccurate jersey numbers and the players were not named (i.e. the starting quarterback would be known as QB # 7).  Since 2004, Madden has given users the capability to enter in the players names along with modifying the ages, colleges, heights, weights, uniform numbers, equipment, etc.  I have tried searching the web for various websites providing such information on these teams and I was not able to find all the information I hoped on any one site.

However, I have pooled together various resources to make this task a less time consuming and arduous one:

Here's a compete list of what I used:

- The NFL Encyclopedia

- Various NFL Yearbooks

- Team websites (helpful for looking up uniform numbers)

- My football card collection

- NFL Films material (The team yearbooks, Super Bowl highlights, and Games of the Week were especially helpful)

- The football database and pro football reference.com websites

- My video game collection (helpful for player faces)

- Tauryx's Madden Classic teams website

Helpful Hints For Completing Classic Rosters in Madden NFL

- As a general rule, heights and weights for each player are generally accurate.  There are some generic heights and weights for extra players on rosters.  You will occasionally find the 6-4 241 QB or offensive lineman that are 6-1 241 or 6-1 271.  In addition, you may spot 6-5 250 defensive lineman.  I have done my best to fill these unfilled spots with actual players on these teams.

- Each team in the Madden game uses a 53-man roster.  In the 50s and 60s, each team carried 40 players which leaves about 13 empty spots for each team.  Each empty spot I have left the name as n/a.  You can either leave them blank or you can make up your own name and identity for that player.  In the 70s, teams used 5 man rosters.  Teams only started carrying 53 players on the rosters in the early 80s and that has held true ever since.

- I have trimmed a year of experience off each player in order for the rookies to labeled as rookies.  A good example is Tony Dorsett of the 1977 Cowboys.  His default character has 1 year of experience.  Since 1977 was his first year in the NFL, I trimmed a year off to make him a rookie.

- I have changed some of the team's depth charts around in order to have the correct players start at their proper positions.  For example, for the 1984 Seattle Seahawks, starting halfback Curt Warner was not included since he missed 15 of the 16 regular season contests and he also missed their playoff defeat at the hands of Miami that year.  I moved starting halfback Dan Doornink to fullback and used the unfilled 3rd quarterback and switched the position to halfback and installed Warner as the starting halfback, since he was the starter on that squad before going down with a season ending injury in Seattle's season opener.

- I noticed that no players on these classic Madden squads have correct uniform numbers, so you will have to change every player's uniform number to their correct number in order to reflect the number the player in question wore that season.

- Prior to the 1977 season, every player in the NFL wore a style 2 helmet.  The default setting is style 1, so you will have to change each player's helmet style to style 2 for all teams that played in 1976 or earlier.

I have included / will include the following teams on this website.
